## The Big Decision
Fifth wheels and travel trailers are the most popular towable RV categories โ and for good reason. Both offer tremendous value, flexibility, and comfort. But choosing between them can feel overwhelming.
This guide breaks it down simply.
## Towing Requirements
**Travel Trailers** hitch to a standard receiver hitch and can be towed by most trucks and many SUVs. A half-ton truck handles trailers up to about 8,500 lbs GVWR comfortably.
**Fifth Wheels** require a fifth-wheel hitch in a truck bed. You'll need a 3/4-ton or 1-ton pickup for most models. The upside? Far superior towing stability โ the king pin connection reduces sway dramatically.
**Verdict:** Travel trailer if you already own a capable half-ton. Fifth wheel if you have or plan to buy a heavy-duty truck.
## Interior Space
Fifth wheels win on space per dollar in most cases. The raised front bi-level design creates a private bedroom suite elevated above the living area. Four or five slides are common, delivering 400+ sq ft of living space.
Travel trailers are catching up. Modern floorplans with two or three slides deliver excellent space at lower price points.
## Price Comparison
| Category | Entry Level | Mid-Range | Luxury |
|----------|-------------|-----------|--------|
| Travel Trailer | $22,000 | $38,000 | $60,000+ |
| Fifth Wheel | $45,000 | $72,000 | $120,000+ |
## Our Recommendation
For families of 4 or more with a half-ton truck: **Travel Trailer**. For full-timers or couples with a heavy-duty truck: **Fifth Wheel**.
