## Why Winterization Matters
Water expands when it freezes. Unprotected water in your RV's pipes can crack fittings, burst the fresh tank, and destroy your water heater โ repairs that easily run $2,000+. Spend an hour winterizing and avoid a headache.
## What You'll Need
- RV antifreeze (non-toxic, propylene glycol) โ 2โ4 gallons
- Water heater bypass kit (most RVs have one)
- Air compressor (optional but faster)
- Adjustable wrench
## Step 1: Drain All Water
1. Turn off water heater โ let it cool completely.
2. Open all low-point drains (under the RV, usually a red and blue plug).
3. Open all faucets, shower, and toilet flush to clear lines.
4. Drain the fresh water tank.
## Step 2: Bypass the Water Heater
The water heater holds 6โ10 gallons. Bypass it so you don't fill it with antifreeze. Use the bypass valve (usually in the rear cabinet near the heater).
## Step 3: Add Antifreeze
1. Remove the water pump inlet screen.
2. Connect a tube from the pump to your antifreeze jug.
3. Turn on the pump and open each faucet โ hot and cold โ until pink antifreeze flows.
4. Do toilets, outdoor shower, and icemaker line.
## Step 4: Protect Other Systems
- Add antifreeze to all drain traps (pour a cup down each drain).
- Remove and store batteries in a warm location.
- Cover roof vents with vent cushions.
- Leave cabinet doors open for air circulation.
